For 2D Typography class we are doing a advertising campaign for a Jazz Festival

im actually pretty well underway on this project so i will be posting up some near-complete material soon

i recently put a collage together for this project - a segment of it will be forming the background of the poster (which will be 11 x 17")

here is the collage (which was of course too big to fit on the scanner so i could get it done in 1 scan) -

collages are pretty fun

steady at it

ive been keeping my routine of being up at 6am and getting straight to work

things are looking up

i have myself submerged in CSS, XML and JavaScript right now, and i seem to be turning some sort of corner

back in the day, whenever i tried to learn any of this web scripting, the results were never the same as the instructions i was trying to follow

this may be due to my general lack of intelligence

but these days - everything is rolling out nicely

all this shit is making sense to me and i am starting to see some results

i am easing up on the Flash a little bit since we have intro to Flash coming up next semester (which starts May 7)

sooner rather than later i hope to be compiling some resources that will be useful to anybody else trying to learn these internet technologies

i still see value in keeping this blog going as i am in a development stage and would like to convey the results of my research to be useful to others
but
preparing articles to be viewed online takes more work than one would assume at first

as i believe i already detailed a few months ago

Skate Tag: DONE

Skate Tag is finally done and it seems like the effort was worth it

all the plans came to fruition

a lot of work -

the original design is detailed in earlier posts, but since then, here is a list of elements i had to put together:
- watercolor backgrounds for all the tag pages

- photoshop manipulation of watercolor elements
- illustrator tracing for the skate graphics
- logo tracing
- bar code
- written text
- assembly of transparency layers

and here is the finished product

I decided to mount it on Foam Core in a attempt to minimize expenses

as you can see i stuck with some line art and employed some general design principles

as i was aiming to do - the design featured fonts and words

i aimed to make a ridiculous statement and follow it up with some ambiguity (both in content and style)

Instructor is a cool guy who gets the point across.

But there is just something wrong with the discipline.
The textbook suggests that there is something wrong with the approach to Psychology as a whole.

A lot of redundancy and needless complication. Which is a shame because the subject matter is of supreme importance to anybody walking on the surface of this planet and existing among other people.

It is unfortunate that we are still at a point in civilization where conveying information is done in such a sterile manner. Textbooks explain things in such a convoluted way that the obvious connections between things is not readily visible.

Take for example right now - we are learning about learning.
Pavlov's dog - conditioned stimulus - unconditioned stimulus - conditioned and unconditioned responses.

A few weeks ago we were learning about memory and how the memory structure works.

Broken down to their base components - the memory system and learning system are the exact same thing.

There is a principle called habituation which is common to both. Habituation suggests that the more often something is repeated, the less likely you are to notice the details.

You REMEMBER that it is not necessary to pay attention to the details, because you LEARNED that the details are not of imminent importance.

When you take it a step further and keep the physical structures in mind (the brain and the process of perception), it becomes even more obvious that the entire process is so fluid and intricately linked that to even give one part of the process a title is to form a inaccurate separation.

That there is a long-term storage in the brain - that the most dependable type of memory is episodic memory - those memories formed by doing something - suggests that learning occurs when people are participating in actions.

These processes are actual. They cannot be accurately conveyed in a textbook - they can hardly be communicated right now in this blog.

Learning and memory are not 2 different topics.

They are as inter-related as digestion and the digestive system.

Memory is required to learn - learning is the resulted of being able to formulate a memory structure.

Learning perpetuates itself.
We learn what to and what not to remember.

I am going to have to formulate some sort of diagram of the perception/memory structure.

I swear to god i can condense this entire textbook into a series of 4 or 5 diagrams.

i was wondering where this dude disappeared to - this album is a banger

i am not gonna rant and rave about it because that never seems to accomplish much - but this album will be getting heavy rotation over the next month

Holocaust' style is another one of those styles you never heard before, and with the production everything really comes together on this album

i had to stop by the school to pick up my paint brushes
as i was leaving - i went to take my CD player out of my bag and didnt my prototype sculpture decide to see if he could fly?

It fell a entire floor of the TEL building

its funny - in class i was wondering what kind of idiot would get their project broken - and just for clarification - its my category of idiot

but - as i said it was just a prototype

i was only carrying it wiff me as a point of reference when i went to buy paint (so i could show the dude at the store what i would be painting on)

as you can see here - the rest of the militia is still in tact:

didnt feel it too much at first, but i am coming around on it

it is dense

definitely a independent delivery as it would have little mass appeal although the message is universal

Toy Building Process

This is a basic rundown of the process I am planning on using:

1. basic wire base frame:

3. cover up wire

4. addition of foot and opposing leg

5. body piece

6. addition of head and other opposing arm + some face details - also widening base at top

i will obviously add more pictures of the addition of details as i get to that stage

things look promising - i will make some alterations to the style of these figures to get exactly what i am looking for - but all and all things are going better than i thought they would a few hours ago

still plenty of room for disaster tho - dont worry

Toy Prototypes #1 and 2

here are the first prototypes i tried to put together in accordance with my sketch designs

you will notice that one is bigger than the other

i did that big one first to make sure that my design was feasible

this morning i got hit by a strike of inspiration while trying to figure out a way to make the characters stable but dynamic at the same time (dynamic is the word of the day)

so basically - the character is built around a central pillar which acts as the LEG and the ARM on the OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE BODY (ie - left leg, right arm)

this way there is a stable pillar, but i can make the character look like he is in motion rather than just standing still

also - one of the dudes in my class mentioned i might want to take that idea AND add some wire re-inforcement - which you will see in further detail in the next post

as you can see - this pillar design allows me to make the character look like he is running and gunning

Here are a list of things i am going to accomplish in the next 72 hours:

Psychology Project - Funny How Things Turn Out

our big project for Psychology class is a creative project for which we had 4 options

the Instructor mentioned that if we had something different in mind, then we could run it by him to see if it would be feasible

one of the options consisted of taking a abstract 'doodle'-type drawing (something that somebody draws when they arent really paying attention), and expand it to be a larger piece which reflects their thought process

since i have been working over these past few years to obliterate my conscious and subconscious and merge them into one 'thing', i have found myself frequently putting mnemonics to use (as i mentioned in a previous post with reference to the movie 'Memento')
this got me thinking about the psych project

i had a idea to try to use all of the mnemonic structures that i am familiar with and merge them into one image - and so far (from the rough sketches) i am excited about the effects that are coming up

mnemonics rely on structures and patterns that are easy to recall and lend themselves to making connections to information

accordingly - it can be said that a 'mnemonic system' is a very structured system

the interesting effect emerges when you compile a bunch of mnemonic systems in the same place - because you get a huge shitload of 'orderly' information (structured trails and packages) in what looks to be a chaotic arrangement

here is a little sample of where this project seems to be heading:

upon completion of this project - i might sleep for a couple of months

what you see above was done in pencil crayon on a 4" x 6" sheet

i am aiming at putting the good copy on 11" x 14"

really looking forward to this one

sort of like consolidating everything i have ever done ever in a visually stimulating way

After last weekend's rain-soaked debacle, i finally had a chance today to make it to that printing place that we were referred to

the shop is called 'Marcormedia'

what a nice set-up they got there

the dude who runs the show seemed like a nice guy and loaded me up with some business cards and flyers

i have to remember to dish those out to some of the other people in class

anyway - he had some printing solutions for the upcoming projects (most imminently - the Toy Project) and i am looking forward to working with somebody who knows what they are doing

it sounds like its gonna be about 20 beans to print the packaging for this Toy Project, and about the same for the other upcoming projects (skate tag and snowboard)

i took some video of my trip down there today but it doesnt look like ill have time to put it together tonite

Toy Sketches and Sculpting Research

Here are the preliminary sketches for one of the toy pieces:

As you can see - it is going to be a little alien dude packin a big gun and also in a running pose as tho he is carrying something

i have those cork/rubber/felt stoppers that will be mounted on that top hand - and if everything goes well - you should be able to arrange about 5 or 6 of these guys in a formation that they will be able to carry something

it would be a interesting decoration piece and might still be cool for kids to play with

as for research into sculpey techniques:

all i did was type 'Super Sculpey' into Google and I got sent to the main Sculpey site

they have tutorials and tips right there - which is great because they range from beginner to advanced

the best piece of advice (for my purposes) that i read was that one dude says that he uses index cards to put his pieces on and even puts the index card in the oven when he cooks it - and the index card does not burn

since these are going to be small pieces, i am going to employ that technique as well

the sculpey site is so ridiculously thorough with the tips and tutorials that i dont really see myself venturing too far away from it as far as research goes

if i have time tomorrow i might peep the site that the Instructor showed us in class (i have the link in my notebook)

Toy Project: Adventures at Home Depot

since the deadline for the Toy Project has turned this into a major priority and i still dont have a concrete idea, i have resolved to pursue a plan A and keep plans B thru ZZZ in mind

today is March 14
the deadline is March 26

so the problem is clear

factoring my personal lean into it: i will not produce a toy that is just eye-candy

it needs to have some sort of functionality

producing something without functionality is a violation of some sort of code i subscribe to

so i wouldnt be able to do that and sleep comfortably (or enjoy it)

so:
i am letting the project take its own form:

- something simple
- something functional
- something interactive
- something that allows people to be creative themselves

i am sticking with the alien theme

i am still aiming at making a series of small alien figures but the idea is now refined:
- so it will be less time consuming - i am going to make a cookie cutter so i can have a consistent size for the figures, and will let them have differences based on their colors and poses

also - i have decided to have them double as a platform so that when they come together - they can hold something (like those scenes in the cartoons where ants carry away a person's picnic lunch)

Toy Project

- some vinyl, cork, and felt guards so that the figures can be put on delicate surfaces with no problem
- the figures will have a wire (paperclip) structure so i had to pick up some wire cutters
- Home Depot did not have any Sheet Metal ribbon strips, so I found what I needed on a lumber shipment that they had received and asked if they could cut a piece off for me - they said no so i snapped a piece off anyway

the sheet metal strip will become the cookie cutter

i have a set of pliers at home that i will use to bend it into the shape i need

so - next step is to put the cookie cutter together - and start churning out a couple of these little dudes

and if it dont work - then move on to plan B

the objective is to have the toy basically done by the weekend so i can put the package together next week

(PS - it makes no sense that this project is due before the skate tag project)

abandoning Photobucket is important for now, but some consideration has to be made about the programs im using

Photoshop and Illustrator are great - but ive already made a commitment to get familiar with the Open Source software (GIMP and Inkscape)

BUT
since i am just learning the programs right now - i cant determine whether it is better to continue working with Photoshop and Illustrator and then make the switch-over at a more convenient time
OR
put in some time now and make the switch

as i type this post i am starting to think that it is wise at this exact moment to stick with what is easiest - the Adobe programs - and then make the switch if the switch is absolutely necessary

from my brief experience so far - the transition from the Adobe programs to them Open Source joints is not that rough

we got some executive decisions being made over here because the ratio of blog posts to actual work being done is not representative

literally: im working 24/7 over here

when i sleep - i meditate on ways to be more productive

so - this blog process is trippin things up

so here are the executive decisions being made:

1. photobucket account: cancelled until needed at a later date
- the plain fact is - photos that get uploaded to the blog directly ALSO appear in the Google Picasa web system - which is basically Google's version of Flickr or Photobucket - this saves me having to save the images to Photobucket and then cross-reference them to the Blog / Google account

2. all scans and notes are going to be uploaded directly to online and not much care is going to be taken to save them in a offline database

3. emphasis is going to be placed in 2 main directions:
- techniques to become relentlessly creative/productive as needed vs stockpiling old elements for future use
- assembling all projects under one umbrella which conveys a consistent theme

maybe im rambling right now

but i have a big pile of shit right beside me that belongs online but i have no time to put it online using the process that i have been using so far

in summary - today was a pain in the ass yet enjoyable at the same time

and i need to find a more efficient blogging technique

for the last few years - i have been adamant about destroying all my old notes and notebooks - and i still do except for this blog

but i will admit that it is a interesting resource to be able to look at and observe how you put shit together in the past

i have to look into these photo-blog sites and consider the pros and cons of switching either this blogger site or the photobucket site

things i am gonna look into:

- Flickr which i already dont like because i have a (possibly unreasonable) dislike of Yahoo-related products
- the google photo site 'picasa'
- i also have to investigate Multiply a bit more - i have the hunch that that place is the best option - but without the google backing i am hesitant to commit to their (superior) service

it would be wise to make the switch sooner rather than later if there is gonna be any switches

i will prolly find a way to keep all these sites

Strange Days pt II

Some cheap-ass plastic tools (i actually picked these up partially because the texture on them is this swirly-brown texture which kind of reminded me of my Skate-Tag assignment) - these should be good for the bigger pieces i do - maybe not so much the smaller ones (plus they were cheap which was the most important thing)

Strange Days + Revenge of the Super Sculpey

damn i have too much fun

today was a pretty rough day actually:

here it is summarized wiff pictures -

first of all - i guess i can trace it back to last night as i was falling asleep while using adobe illustrator at the library at school

man - i aint even think i was gonna make it home

this morning - i woke up and made a list of things to do (including updating the blog) and got off to a late start

i left the house and got just far enough away from the house that i wouldnt turn back when i realized that i remembered my CD player, but forgot to put a CD in it

we finally got a mild day in the city, so everything is melting
i had tossed on a old pair of shoes that ive had for more than a decade which i usually trust for wet and muddy conditions
- by the time i got to the bus stop - i realized that both shoes had developed a hole in the bottom

but as a true soldier - i ventured forth

i got downtown to the theater district where i was gonna check out the printing place for the In-Line Skate Tag assignment

the instructor gave us general directions where it was - but all i remembered was that it was near the Hooters restaurant on the corner of John and whatever

So I found the Hooters --

-- but I didnt find the print shop

i think it was in this building - and i searched around in there for a minute
but i dint much feel like hammering on doors and asking if they knew where a print shop was

so i admitted defeat - resolved to learn the lesson that its important to know where you are going before you try and go there (i swear i learned that lesson in the past - but as i said before - there is clearly something wrong wiff my memory)

this was ok

no sweat - because my real objective was to make it to Loomis at Sadina and ______ (Richmond I think) to pick up the molding material we need for the Toy Project

this stuff is called 'super sculpey' - but that name is a little too whimsical for me to be using on a regular basis - so i am gonna stick with 'clay'

anyway - i make it to Loomis and walk in

of course they dont have any of this clay

not only that - but they give me a strange look when i ask if they have any in stock (as tho they never heard of it before)

it was looking bleak at that point

on my way out the door, i asked the dude behind the counter if there was any other art stores around and he told me there was some joint called Carrys or Currys or Corrys or something on Queen street about 2 blocks away

so i set out in search of this next place

and fortunately i had something go my way

here is what the store looks like:

here is my rough notes for the upcoming Toy Project in Sketching for Communications class:

i was actually on my heels for this one until i had a talk with my sister who reminded me about my natural inclination toward aliens and robots

so i am sticking wiff aliens and robots

as it stands right now:
it is going to be a series of small toy figures approx 1 - 2" high - i am thinking about putting together about a dozen of them (as long as it doesnt take a decade)
and
i am going to put together some sort of simple small space ship vehicle

i was hesitant about this project at first - but ive already warmed up to it

the cross-over it has with my other projects is that i seem to be cultivating a consistent style - or at least noticing a theme in the work i put together

there is some underlying commonality behind it all which is cool

all media conveys a message - even something as seemingly trivial as a toy is a opportunity for communication

tho it may be indirect - it is still there

you are what you eat, and you are reflected in what you produce

Friday: Video Project - Sasquatch

For video class we have to assemble a 1 minute film which involves a series of different types of camera shots

we had a hard time co-ordinating everything (since there is 4 members in the group) but eventually everybody came thru

this clip here is the long version which one of the group members flexed his expertise to get this 2+ minutes down to a coherent 1 minute (he cut out most of my ridiculous rambling)

anyway - here is the full 2+ minute version - it turned out pretty funny

im gonna put together the out-takes as well some time next week just for kicks

i have more to say about video as well

overall - between shooting and editing (color correction, etc) - it took approximately 5 hours (which is less than i thought it would take)

but like i said - we may still work on it some more

Thursday Night: Caught up in the Matrix

im hesitant to talk about anything that goes on in regards to Interactivity class for fear of possible copyright violation and subsequent lawsuit

the instructor for that course remains a enigma

in the halls he has been likened to such figures as:

Chuck Norris:

House MD

and various other figures

me personally:

i will not make any comparisons

the class is definitely a action packed 2 hours

i spent Thursday night finishing up my preparations for Friday's class
